What Information Can You Get from an Apple Warranty Check?

Our free checker checks Apple warranty and coverage information using your device's serial number. No Apple Account login needed — just enter the serial number above. Works for every Apple device: iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, AirPods, Apple Pencil, and Apple TV.

Here is what your free report includes:

  • Warranty Status — Whether the standard one-year warranty is active or expired, with the exact expiration date.
  • AppleCare+ Status — Whether the device has an active AppleCare+ plan. Also shows eligibility and how many days remain to add coverage.
  • Activation Status — Whether the device has been set up and used. Critical when buying a device advertised as "new and sealed."
  • Purchase Date — The purchase date Apple has on file for the device's original retail sale. Used to calculate warranty expiration. If it appears incorrect, the owner can provide proof of purchase to Apple to update it.
  • Replaced Device — Whether this is a replacement unit provided by Apple through a service request.
  • Refurbished Status — Whether Apple sold this device as Certified Refurbished (new battery, outer shell, full testing).
  • Loaner Device — Whether this is an Apple-owned loaner provided during a repair. Loaners should not be sold or purchased.
  • Registered Device — Whether the device is registered to an Apple Account.
  • Valid Purchase Date — Whether Apple has a verified purchase date on file. Affects warranty accuracy.
  • Model Information — The exact model name, confirming the device identity.
Note about AirPods: Activation status is not reliable for AirPods — they can be used via standard Bluetooth with Android devices without ever registering in Apple's systems. "Not Activated" does not guarantee unused.

How to Find Your Apple Serial Number

Serial numbers are typically 10–12 characters (letters and numbers). Here is where to find yours:

  • iPhone or iPad Settings → General → About. The most reliable method — reads directly from hardware.
  • Mac Apple menu → About This Mac. On macOS Ventura+: System Settings → General → About.
  • Apple Watch On the paired iPhone: Apple Watch app → My Watch → General → About. Also engraved on the back case.
  • AirPods Settings → Bluetooth → tap "i" next to your AirPods. Also printed inside the charging case lid.
  • Original Box or Receipt Printed on the barcode label on the back/bottom of the box, and on the purchase receipt.
  • Apple Account (Online) Sign in to appleid.apple.com → Devices → select your device. Works even without the physical device.
Buying tip: Ask the seller for the serial number from Settings → General → About. Cross-reference it with the number on the original box — if they don't match, the device may have been replaced or tampered with. For a full decode, use our Apple Serial Number Check.

Apple Warranty Types Explained

Apple Limited Warranty — 1 Year

Every new Apple device includes a one-year warranty covering manufacturing defects: screens that stop responding, batteries that fail prematurely, speakers that stop working without physical damage.

It does not cover: drops, cracks, liquid exposure, cosmetic damage, or unauthorized modifications. The warranty runs for one year from the original retail purchase date by the end-user purchaser — not activation date.

EU Consumer Law — 2 Years in Europe

EU law (Directive 2019/771) requires a 2-year legal guarantee on all consumer products. This is a seller obligation, separate from Apple's warranty:

  • Year 1: Apple handles claims directly under their warranty.
  • Year 2: Responsibility shifts to the seller where you purchased the device.
  • UK: Up to 6 years under the Consumer Rights Act 2015.

"AS IS" Devices — Purchase Date: April 1, 1978

If a warranty check shows April 1, 1978 as the purchase date, the device is classified as "AS IS." These are units that were:

  • Returned within the 30-day return period
  • Traded in at Apple Stores or authorized carriers
  • Processed through Apple's reverse logistics chain

The 1978 date is a deliberate placeholder (Apple was incorporated on April 1, 1976). Some show January 1, 1985 instead. These devices carry no warranty, no complimentary support, and cannot get AppleCare+. They may work perfectly — they just have zero manufacturer protection.

AppleCare+ (Extended Coverage)

A paid plan that extends the standard warranty and adds:

  • Hardware coverage for 2–3 years (or monthly/annual subscription)
  • Unlimited accidental damage incidents (service fee per incident)
  • Battery replacement below 80% capacity
  • 24/7 priority technical support

For many new Apple devices, can be added within 60 days of purchase.

AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss

Everything in AppleCare+ plus coverage for up to 2 theft/loss incidents per 12 months (with deductible). Requires Find My to be enabled. Available for iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch.

Out of Warranty

All coverage expired. Apple will still service the device at full out-of-warranty pricing.

Warranty Transfers to New Owners

Apple's Limited Warranty follows the device, not the person. Buy a used iPhone with 6 months remaining? You get those 6 months. No transfer needed. Most prepaid AppleCare+ plans also transfer automatically. However, monthly or annual AppleCare+ subscriptions tied to an Apple Account do not transfer — the new owner would need to purchase their own plan.

Why Check Apple Warranty Before Buying Used?

Verify remaining coverage A device advertised as "under warranty" may have days left. Our check shows the exact expiration date.
Detect replacements & refurbished Sellers sometimes list these as "brand new." The Replaced and Refurbished flags reveal the truth.
Catch resealed devices "New and sealed" but shows "Activated"? Someone has opened and used it.
Confirm AppleCare+ Active AppleCare+ significantly increases a used device's value.
Spot loaner devices Loaners belong to Apple and can be reclaimed at any time.
Check valid purchase date Important if you ever need to make a warranty claim.

IMEICheck vs checkcoverage.apple.com

Both tools let you check Apple warranty status by serial number. The difference is what they show:

Feature Apple IMEICheck
Warranty status & expiration
AppleCare+ status
Activation Status
Replaced Device flag
Refurbished flag
Loaner flag
AppleCare+ eligibility (days remaining)

Check Apple Warranty from Device Settings

You can also check warranty status directly on the device itself — no serial number or website needed:

📱
iPhone / iPad Settings → General → AppleCare & Warranty → tap your device
💻
Mac System Settings → General → AppleCare & Warranty
What it shows: warranty expiration date, hardware support status, chat/phone support eligibility, and coverage for paired devices (AirPods, Apple Watch, Beats) under "Paired Devices."
Limitation: The Settings method only works if you have physical access to the device and it is signed in to an Apple Account. It does not show activation status, replaced/refurbished flags, or loaner detection — for those buyer-relevant details, use our checker above.

Free Check vs PRO Check

The free check on this page accepts serial numbers only. Our PRO checks support both IMEI and serial number — the system automatically converts IMEI to serial. The IMEI Check page also returns warranty data for Apple devices.

Apple's standard warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship — meaning hardware failures that are not caused by the user. It does not cover cracked screens, water damage, bent frames, software issues, or damage from unauthorized repairs.

"AppleCare+" includes accidental damage protection with unlimited incidents (service fee per incident), battery service, and priority support. All current Apple protection plans are AppleCare+ or AppleCare One.
AppleCare One is Apple's multi-device protection plan. Starting at $19.99/month where available, it covers multiple Apple devices under a single subscription. Unlike standard AppleCare+ (which must be purchased within 60 days), AppleCare One can cover devices you already own that are up to four years old and in good condition. It includes all AppleCare+ benefits: unlimited accident repairs, battery coverage, theft and loss protection for iPhone/iPad/Apple Watch, and priority support. You can add or remove devices at any time. Availability varies by country and region.
