What Is iCloud Activation Lock?
Activation Lock is a security feature built into every Apple device (iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Apple Watch, Mac). It turns on automatically when you enable Find My iPhone in your iCloud settings. Once active, it links the device to your Apple ID — meaning no one can erase, reactivate, or use the device without your Apple ID password.
This is Apple's primary anti-theft measure. If a device is lost or stolen, Activation Lock prevents anyone from using it — even after a complete factory reset. The device will remain locked to the original owner's Apple ID until they remove it remotely or sign in with their credentials.
When you check iCloud status on our tool, you'll see one of two results: ON (Find My iPhone is enabled, Activation Lock is active) or OFF (Find My iPhone is disabled, device is free to set up with any Apple ID). Always check iCloud status before purchasing a used Apple device.
How to Check iCloud Status Using IMEI
Our free iCloud checker lets you verify the Find My iPhone (FMI) status of any Apple device before you buy it. Simply enter the IMEI or serial number in the field above and run a free iCloud check — the result shows whether Activation Lock is currently ON or OFF.
What does the iCloud status tell you?
iCloud OFF (FMI OFF)
Find My iPhone is disabled. There is no Activation Lock on this device — it can be set up with a new Apple ID after a reset. This is the safe status you want to see when buying a used device. Note: the seller should still sign out of iCloud completely before handing it over.
iCloud ON (FMI ON)
Find My iPhone is enabled. The device is linked to an Apple ID. If you buy it in this state, you will need the original owner's Apple ID and password to use it. Do not buy a device with iCloud ON unless the seller disables it in front of you.
You can check iCloud status using the device's IMEI number (dial *#06#) or the serial number (found in Settings → General → About). Both work equally well for an iCloud status check on our tool.
Why Check iCloud Before Buying a Used iPhone or iPad?
Buying a used Apple device without checking the iCloud status first is the single most common mistake second-hand buyers make. If the device still has Find My iPhone enabled, you will be locked out — the phone or tablet becomes a paperweight that can only connect to Wi-Fi but cannot be set up or used normally.
An iCloud-locked device will display "iPhone Locked to Owner" or "Activation Lock" on the setup screen. At that point, the only way to unlock it is with the original owner's Apple ID and password. Apple cannot remove Activation Lock without proof of original purchase, and there is no legitimate workaround.
Before completing any used Apple purchase: Ask the seller for the IMEI or serial number and run a free iCloud check here first. If the status is ON, ask the seller to disable Find My and sign out of iCloud in front of you — this requires their Apple ID password, so only the actual owner can do it. After they sign out, verify the iCloud status is OFF by running the check again. Only then proceed with payment.
If the seller cannot or refuses to disable iCloud — do not buy the device. No price is low enough to justify an iCloud-locked device you cannot use.

Frequently Asked Questions — iCloud Check
Activation Lock is Apple's anti-theft feature that automatically activates when you turn on Find My iPhone. It locks the device to your Apple ID so that no one else can erase, reactivate, or use it without your password. Even a factory reset won't remove Activation Lock — the device will still require the original Apple ID credentials during setup.
iCloud ON means Find My iPhone is enabled and the device is linked to an Apple ID. The device has Activation Lock active. iCloud OFF means Find My iPhone is disabled and there is no Activation Lock — the device can be set up with a new Apple ID. The seller should still sign out of iCloud completely before handing it over. When buying used, always verify the status is OFF before paying.
FMI stands for Find My iPhone — Apple's built-in feature for locating, locking, and erasing Apple devices remotely. An FMI check (also called a Find My iPhone check) verifies whether this feature is currently enabled on a specific device. Our tool performs this check using the device's IMEI or serial number, returning an ON or OFF result instantly.
Enter the device's IMEI or serial number in the field above and click "Check iCloud." You'll get an instant result showing whether Find My iPhone is ON or OFF. To find the IMEI, dial *#06# on the phone or go to Settings → General → About. The serial number is also found in Settings → General → About. If you don't have physical access to the device, ask the seller to provide the IMEI or serial number before meeting.
Yes, our iCloud status check is completely free and requires no registration. It instantly shows whether Find My iPhone is ON or OFF on any Apple device. For deeper device information — including blacklist status, carrier lock, warranty dates, and more — we offer
premium check services.
"iPhone Locked to Owner" (or "iPad Locked to Owner") appears on the setup screen when Activation Lock is active. This means Find My iPhone was enabled and the previous owner did not sign out of iCloud before the device was erased. The device cannot be set up or used without the original owner's Apple ID and password. If you encounter this screen on a device you've just purchased, contact the seller immediately and ask them to remove the device from their Apple ID remotely via icloud.com/find.
Activation Lock can only be legitimately removed by the original owner — either by signing out of iCloud on the device (Settings → [name] → Sign Out), or remotely by removing the device from their Apple ID at icloud.com/find. In some cases, Apple Support may be able to help if you provide valid proof of original purchase, but this process is not guaranteed and can take time. Our tool checks iCloud status — it does not remove or bypass Activation Lock. Be cautious of any service claiming to "bypass" or "remove" Activation Lock for a fee, as many are scams.
Yes. You can check iCloud status using either the IMEI number or the serial number — both work on our tool. The IMEI is a 15-digit number (dial *#06# or find it in Settings → General → About). The serial number is an alphanumeric code also found in Settings → General → About. If you're buying a used device remotely, ask the seller for either number and run the check before committing to the purchase.
Before buying any used Apple device, run these checks in order: 1)
iCloud check — verify Find My iPhone is OFF (use this tool). 2)
Blacklist check — verify the device isn't reported stolen (use our
IMEI Check). 3)
Carrier lock check — verify the device is unlocked or compatible with your carrier (use our
iPhone Carrier Check). 4) Ask the seller to sign out of iCloud in front of you. 5) Physically inspect the device (screen, battery health, buttons). Only complete the purchase after all checks pass.
No. iCloud ON simply means Find My iPhone is enabled — most active Apple users have this turned on as a security precaution. It does not mean the device is stolen. However, when buying a used device, an iCloud ON status is a serious red flag if the seller cannot disable it in front of you. A legitimate seller will have no problem signing out of their iCloud account before handing over the device.
